In the beginning of this story, I met Ruby - the main character. Ruby is a 17 year old that has just been taken in by her older sister, Cora, that she hasn’t spoken to in years. Cora has it all, a husband, a beautiful house, and people who love her. Ruby’s mother disappeared one day and abandoned Ruby to fend for herself. So, Ruby is not thrilled about the idea of living with her sister. She wants out. Fast.
Cora went off to college years before, and promised to visit and keep communicating with Ruby. They both knew they could not rely on their mother anymore after the divorce from their father and the daily stress of keeping up with expenses. After some time however, Ruby did not receive calls or letters from Cora anymore, and Ruby figured she didn’t want anything to do with her anymore.
So, let’s just say, living with Cora for a year was not Ruby’s first choice. She didn’t fit in with their lifestyle. Ruby came from a dump of a house, a job that hardly paid, and a mother that didn’t seem to care anymore. They lived completely opposite lives.
Throughout the story, Ruby and Cora begin to communicate and start to understand each other. Ruby learned that Cora tried to communicate with her, but their mother didn’t want any of this, so she made sure Cora never knew where they were and how to find them. Cora learned that Ruby was just a teenage girl who needed some support in her life, and that growing up without that support was a hard thing to overcome.
In the end, Cora and Ruby had a strong relationship that will stay strong for the rest of their lives. They both listened to each other found out the truth of their childhoods. Living with Cora brought the two of them together, and made them find their relationship that was lost.
